First published in December 1967, Captain Marvel is arguably Marvel’s most powerful superhero. Created by Stan Lee, the character’s original iteration was as Captain Mar-Vell, who fought numerous enemies including the Mad Titan Thanos. Big changes occur when Carol Danvers is caught in an explosion that merges her DNA with that of Captain Mar-Vell, and she subsequently gains his powers and becomes Ms. Marvel and later Captain Marvel (in honour of the title’s original holder). Carol Danvers is the version that is explored in 2019’s Captain Marvel, which delves into the character's origins and links her into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
