Batman is one of DC’s most recognisable heroes. The alter ego of billionaire Bruce Wayne, Batman prowls the streets of Gotham City taking on its most dangerous criminals. His first appearance came in 1939, and the Bat has gone on to amass a large and loyal following thanks in part to his story’s dark tones and incredible villains, most notably his nemesis the Joker. In addition to his fantastic range of comic book stories, the Dark Knight has also had success in animation, having various hit TV shows and feature-length movies, including an adaptation of Alan Moore’s Batman: The Killing Joke. The Bat has also seen success on the silver screen, from his 90s rendition in Tim Burton’s Batman to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy featuring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger in his 2009 Academy Award-winning role as the Joker. The hero more recently appeared on the big screen in both Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), and with plans for individual projects well into the 2000’s, the Dark Knight’s popularity and success look to continue for years to come.
