There are few sports stars as well-known or as iconic as Muhammad Ali. In addition to being one of the greatest boxers of all time, Ali became a prominent figure in the quest for peace, which is another important part of his legacy. Born in 1942 as Cassius Clay, Ali began boxing at the age of 12 and remained an amateur into the ’60s when he won an Olympic gold medal at 18. After going pro, Ali won his first heavyweight championship belt in 1963 against Sonny Liston, and went on to take part in some of the most famous fights in history, including the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila. Muhammad Ali’s contribution to boxing, and athletics in general, has earned him a distinguished place in sporting history, and his unmistakable image and motivating speeches remain popular with old and new fans alike. Thanks to an incredible boxing career and inspiring humanitarian work, Ali will always be known as The Greatest.
