The alter ego of billionaire genius Tony Stark, Iron Man is one of Marvel’s most famous superheroes and a founding member of the Avengers. Making his debut in 1963, Iron Man is created as a result of an injury Stark sustains to his chest following a kidnapping. Designing his original suit to save his life and escape his captors, Tony would go on to refine the design, adding weapons and extra armour, and go on to protect the world. Always popular, the character gained additional fans in 2008 when Robert Downey, Jr. took up the famous red metal suit in Marvel's feature-length film Iron Man, which then spurred two sequels. A cinematic success, Iron Man is also part of the Avengers movies along with Captain America and Thor. Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal has given Iron Man a new generation of fans and a new level of popularity.
